30 days ago I decided to quit smoking. Thanks to Allen Carr's method, I now just wonder why smokers are so scared about breaking the chain. It's unbelievably easy. And it makes you feel so damn good!

I spent the first day of the New Year climbing Enchanted Rock, located in Enchanted Rock State Park just north of Fredericksburg, Texas. It’s deep in the Texas Hill Country and has so many wonderful textures and climbing spots that you could spend a week up here and never get bored. It’s somehow hard to capture the true landscape in just one or two pictures…
Surprisingly, I didn’t really have an issue with this climb. The last time I climbed this I was dying the whole way and had to make multiple stops. I was also about 40 pounds lighter, but I was a smoker as well. It really showed me how much healthier I am (even though I gained weight after I smoked) being a non-smoker. For those out there who have set a 2012 New Year’s Resolution to quit smoking: go for it. If I did it, then you can do it, and it’ll be the best thing ever.
I have a lifetime dream to climb a mountain in Colorado, Longs Peak. I was happy that I was able to make it to the top of Enchanted Rock, but I have a long way to go if I’m going to climb a 14,000 foot mountain. As long as I have to go to get in shape… I know that I can. I know I can do it, and I won’t stop until I do!
I expect a lot of days like this in 2012, where I find myself surprised… pushing myself to do more and more… and succeeding.

For almost thirty years I absolutely loved smoking. Is there anything better with coffee, after a meal, after the lovin, on a walk with the dogs in the snow? No, I don't think so. Well, thanks to the little device in my hand in this pic it's been almost four months since I had a cigarette. It is a type of electronic cigarette. Not the crappy type you'd find at your neighborhood convenience store, don't waste your money on those. This is a personal vaporizer called an Ego-T. What looks like smoke in the pic is harmless water vapor. I bought this with much skepticism and four months later I'm still shocked that I never had another cigarette. I'd be more than happy to give all the information I know about this device to anyone who wants to quit smoking. No affiliation with any supplier yada, yada, yada. Believe me when I say to you that if it worked for me it should damn well work for anyone!

My friend wanted to record her last cigarette for posterity.
Une dernière cigarette avant de cesser.

Every year lots of people believe that the turn of the year is a good starting point to improve their life. Frequently heard 'New Year's Resolutions' are to lose weight, drink less alcohol, get a better job and of course quit smoking. Especially that last one is hard to persevere. Now we are nine days into the new year I think a lot of people already have failed (again) to quit smoking.
Note that I don't smoke myself and never did. I find it a disguisting habit. Everyone that is trying to quit, good luck! Life is so much better without smoking!
